An Exhibition of Japanese Haori Jackets

Japanese Haori Jackets: A Journey Inside-Out New Exhibition at the TRC, Leiden 10 March – 26 June 2025

When discussing traditional Japanese clothing, the kimono often takes center stage. Yet, another garment holds an equally fascinating place in Japan’s cultural heritage: the haori.

This elegant jacket, first introduced in the 16th century as an exclusive garment for samurai men, has since evolved into a versatile piece worn by men, women, and children across different occasions. The haori‘s charm lies not only in its practicality but also in its ability to reflect intricate artistry and craftsmanship.

The TRC’s newest exhibition, Haori Inside-Out, offers a glimpse into the diverse world of Japanese jackets, including variations for everyday wear, workwear, and even a traditional firefighter’s jacket. What sets this exhibition apart is its exploration of the hidden world within these garments—the intricate patterns and images deliberately concealed inside, a secret only known to the wearer.

Visitors will also be treated to an exploration of the stunning techniques used to craft haori, such as ikat, shibori (resist-dyeing), damask weaving, metal-thread embroidery, and stencil printing. These techniques turn haori into wearable works of art, showcasing Japan’s dedication to beauty and detail.

This exceptional display is made possible by a 2024 crowdfunding initiative, which enabled the TRC to acquire a significant collection of traditional Japanese clothing. The exhibition has been further supported by the Leiden Council, reflecting a community effort to preserve and celebrate this unique heritage.

Visit the TRC from 10 March to 26 June 2025 to experience the enchanting world of Japanese Haori Jackets: A Journey Inside-Out—an exhibition that unveils both the outer beauty and inner secrets of this remarkable Japanese attire.
