Visitors at DGFT Regional Authorities not allowed to carry more than Rs 10000 cash

Restrictions on Cash for Visitors at DGFT Regional Authorities

As online payment facilities are available for accepting application fee, government dues etc., any visitor, while visiting DGFT offices, carrying cash in excess of Rs. 10,000/- should provide reason for possessing such an amount. In the absence of a bonafide or legitimate reason, entry into the office premises may not be permitted.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) is implementing new restrictions on visitors bringing cash into its Regional Authorities (RAs). Following a directive from the Department of Commerce, DGFT offices will now limit the amount of currency visitors can carry due to the availability of online payment options for fees and dues.

According to a recent circular (File No.3/5/2024-Vig. dated 29.01.2025) from the Department of Commerce, Vigilance Section, visitors carrying cash over Rs.10,000 will be required to provide a valid reason for possessing such an amount. Without a legitimate justification, entry into DGFT office premises will be denied.

The move aligns with the Foreign Trade Policy of 2023, which mandates online payment of application fees as per Appendix 2K.

This measure is intended to reduce cash handling and promote digital transactions within DGFT operations.
