The first weaving manufactories appeared in Russia under Peter I – they were silk, cloth and linen

The construction of sewing factories and factories in the country began only in the 1920s and 1930s; before that, individual artisans, small private firms, ateliers and fashion houses were engaged in sewing. At the same time, the construction of new enterprises in various subsectors began: cotton,
woolen-worsted, silk-weaving and silk-winding, knitwear, sewing, footwear. In parallel with
production, the fashion industry also developed.

many enterprises were destroyed, the industry was able to provide the front with everything necessary and quickly recover in the post-war period. The USSR became one of the world leaders in the light
industry and ranked first in the world in the production of footwear until the 1990s.
