Tamilnadu Textile Policy Note 2023-24

Tamilnadu textiles and clothing industry that accounts 1/3rd of the textile business of the country is one of the largest textile manufacturing hubs on the global map and is constantly being encouraged by the Government of Tamilnadu, to fuel its growth, focusing on value addition, exports and job creation not only for the benefit of the people of Tamilnadu but also for several lakhs of people from other States.  The Hon’ble Minister of Handlooms and Textiles, Mr.R.Gandhi, presented the Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles and Khadi Policy Note in the House on 11.4.2023, announcing numerous benefits for the handlooms and textiles sectors.

In a Press Release issued here today, Mr. Ravi Sam, Chairman, SIMA has thanked the Hon’ble Chief Minister and Hon’ble Minister for Handlooms and Textiles for the initiatives towards strategic shift in Tamilnadu textile sector and announcing 22 policy measures for the handloom and textile sectors.  He has appreciated the announcement of creating a textile city closer to Chennai and the declaration for   Tamilnadu Pavilion in all the major international exhibitions that would boost the Tamilnadu brand and create enormous market opportunities for strengthening domestic and international markets for the whole value chain in the State.  He has appreciated the various fund allocation made for convening the international technical textile conference, R & D facilities, Workshops, skill development, etc. for technical textiles.

SIMA Chairman has also welcomed the various unique policies announced for the handlooms sector including training and development of young handloom entrepreneurs, Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi Centenary Handloom Park at Arani enhancing the benefits for the handloom weavers, encouraging handloom sector to switch over to package dyeing with zero liquid discharge facilities, modernizing handlooms, market survey, Tamilnadu handloom brand, etc.  Mr. Ravi Sam has said that all these policy initiatives would strengthen the whole value chain in the textiles and clothing industry in the State including handlooms and Co-optex.

The medium to long term vision of the Government reflected in the statements in the Policy Note is laudable and would go a long way in achieving the target of one trillion US dollar economy by 2030 envisaged by the Hon’ble Chief Minister.
