Dr NN Mahapatra

In 2014, in Ahmedabad, I started writing my first Textile book on Dyes & Dyeing. Since then, I have intermittently written seven other books related to Textile Dyes, Processing and Technology. I have shared my shop floor experience of 25 yrs in these books. I aim to write these books to make them a worthwhile and viable read. These books provide a straightforward and hands-on approach to techniques that the dyeing technicians, supervisors, and entrepreneurs will find informative and inspiring.

My search for a book that can help research scientists and textile technologists working in R&D labs and textile industries led me to write my own. For my next book, I wanted to write about modern and latest technologies which will benefit all – young and experienced. Innovation in textiles has always inspired me, and I believe many feel the same, and I have aimed to capture that feeling in this book.

In this book, I have introduced some modern techniques in textile processing, which may sound like science fiction, but a day will come when all these techniques will take shape in the industry.

I have answered a few queries often asked by our technicians working in the textile industry. A significant part of this book is about sustainable innovations focusing on alternative eco-based processes used in textile processing.

This book also touches on the life of Prof Venkataraman, widely regarded as the “father of the Indian dyestuff industry,” and Prof Ian Durham, the co-inventor of reactive dyes.

A mentor plays a vital role in one’s life, and Prof D.M. Lewis, University of Leeds, UK, has been that person in my journey. I thank him for contributing an exciting article on ‘Colouration in the next decade’.
