The ready-made garment (RMG) industry is a mainstay of this economic success story: Bangladesh is today one of the world’s largest garment exporters, with the RMG sector accounting for 84 percent of Bangladesh’s exports. Bangladesh is the second largest apparel manufacturer behind only China. About 60 percent of clothes made in Bangladesh end up in European markets. There are over 5,000 garment factories factories in Bangladesh, employing approximately 4 million workers a year.
In 2020, the export value ready-made garments (RMG) in Bangladesh amounted to approximately 27.95 billion U.S. dollars. This was a decrease from the previous year, in which RMG exports in Bangladesh amounted to just over 34 billion U.S. dollars.
